Sometimes things come up that are out of our control and we need to use a credit card for the purchase because we don’t have the cash on hand. Other times, we just have to have the latest toy or gadget and use a credit card to buy it. But when the bill comes due, it can be unpleasant.

If things get too out of hand, we can be left with a large credit card debt and no easy way to pay it down. We end up paying a ton of interest, sometimes for years after the purchase was made. Fortunately there are places to turn to if you have a credit card debt problem.

The first step to take is to try and get a lower interest rate on your card. This can be done in either of two ways. The first – and probaby simplest – way is to call your credit card provider’s customer service number and ask for a lower rate.

They’ll tell you within seconds if you qualify for a better rate or not, and you’ll be surprised at how often you will get it simply by asking.

The second way you can get a better rate is by applying for a new card that has a better interest rate than your current one. You can then transfer the balance from the higher rate card onto the lower rate one and save the difference in interest.

Credit Counseling is another option for managing your credit card debt. There are many credit counseling services that can help you work with your current creditors to get a better rate and more reasonable repayment schedule. These services deal with the credit card companies on a regular basis, so they can often succeed where you might not if you call them yourself.

In many cases, credit counseling is a free service – you don’t have to pay anything, or if you do it’s a minimal charge. You’ll need to have all your credit card information ready for them, as well as a list of all your creditors and balances with each.

They can take that information and work out the most effective payment schedule for your particular situation. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by credit card debt, don’t keep struggling to stay on top of it. Talk to a credit counseling service and start to get ahead again.

Debt Settlement – Working With Your Creditors To Get Out Of Debt

Debt happens to good families, it’s a fact. There are so many reasons and circumstances why people find themselves in debt. When a spouse becomes ill, or unemployed or injured families get behind and sometimes end up in debt. Some people are able to find other funds and get out of debt on their own, but there are others who need assistance. One way a person or family can get themselves out of a severe debt problem is by debt settlement.

Debt settlement commonly occurs in one of two ways. It can be arranged by a creditor or can happen through protective legal action.

If you are in debt and have no way to make the payments and obligations that you have incurred, then one thing you can do is to contact your creditor and create an agreement to either pay off part of the debt or work out a payment plan over the long term. If, for example, you have a relatively small amount of debt that over time has accrued a lot of interest, there may be certain time when you can work out an agreement with your creditor to pay off only the principal or the principal with a smaller portion of the interest. Creditors will agree to this because they would rather get some of their money than none at all. Another thing you may be able to arrange is a long-term payment plan where you can skip a few payments or go into forbearance for a set period of time in order to get your feet back on the ground and then continue to pay off your debt.

If you find yourself in a bad situation where you just have no way to pay off your debts, you may need to get legal protection. Legal protection normally includes bankruptcy or debt reorganization. Of course this isn’t the first or most attractive choice for almost everyone, but for some people it is the only way to get them back on stable ground. That being said, when deciding on bankruptcy or debt settlement, always consult with your lawyer to be sure you have examined all the options first.

Options available may also depend on whether your borrowing is secured or unsecured.

Generally for personal unsecured debt, options such as a Debt Management Plan may be suitable. Alternatively, if you have a fair amount of income (although it may not be enough to meet current monthly agreed payments) an Individual Voluntary arrangement could be an option.

The Office of Fair Trading have guidelines that all creditors should abide by, so it is worth reading up on your rights so that if a creditor does work outside of the guidelines, you will recognise this and this will help you inform your creditors you know what rights you have and how you are protected.

If you find it too difficult to talk to your creditors, you can authorise a third party to deal with your debt on your behalf. As long as you have authorised them, your creditors must respect your wishes.

There are a number of financial companies that help people with debt problems. These companies can explain options that available and encourage you not to over commit yourself into anything that may cause more stress.

It is also important to be wary of banks offering refinance. Refinance could be a good option, however, consider the interest you will be paying back on top of what you borrow.

Dont be tempted by quick fixes, such as borrowing more money, if you know in a few months time you will find yourself back in the same situation.

Regardless of your financial situation, whether you are dealing with personal debt or business debt, there is always a solution. Do not be afraid to seek help and face your debt on. Do not put letters unopened in the bin or in a drawer hidden away.

As long as your creditors are aware of the situation, they can consider whatever proposals are put before them when coming to an agreement on the best way to repay the debt.
